Donny's top 10 things to do in the town centre this week

Week commencing Monday 7 October 2013


Here's Donny's top ten highlights for the week...


1    Monday marks the start of the final week of the St Leger-inspired Horsing Around show at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery.
 
2   Tuesday of course is a full Market Day on Doncaster's award winning Markets with over 400 stalls, the majority of them indoors - including over 70 food traders in the dedicated Food Hall, Fish and Fruit & Veg Markets. There are Full Market Days on Friday and Saturday as well and not forgetting the giant Antique & Second Hand Market every Wednesday.

3   Tuesday also sees the first visit of the acclaimed Phoenix Dance Theatre to Cast with their show Particle Velocity.

4   Cast is also the venue for Wednesday's highlight - a new take on the story of Cinderella's Ugly Sisters by Leeds-based Rash Dash. 
 
5   Wednesday also has a Lunchtime Concert at the Museum showcasing the talents of students of pianist Jonathan Gooing at 1pm.                       
 
6   The Salutation hosts a Ladies Pamper Evening in their upstairs function room from 5.30 - 9pm on Thursday with a range of treatments and stalls. 

7   Thursday also marks Cast's first Comedy Club night - set to be a regular feature on the Doncaster entertainment scene.
 
8   Friday is all about live music with David Formula & the Finks at Cast,, the Ramona Flowers at The Leopard, Roaming Son at Cask Corner and the Nightshift at Francie's Irish Bar among just some of the highlights. 9   Social Bar on Bradford Row  is visited by Tinchy Stryder on Saturday night as he brings his DJ set to town from 11pm. 

10 South Parade, Hallgate, Silver Street and East Laith Gate from aronud 11.30am on Sunday are the places to watch a great Parade of Vintage Vhicles as they make their way through the town centre en route to Sandtoft .

Donny's top 10 things to do in the town centre this week


Week commencing Monday 30 September 2013


Here's Donny's top ten highlights for the week...


1   On Monday it's the opening night of the very first show by the young people of the Theatre Gang at Doncaster Little Theatre. The variety show is also playing on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Curtain up at seven each night.
 
2   Tuesday of course is a full Market Day on Doncaster's award winning Markets with over 400 stalls, the majority of them indoors - including over 70 food traders in the dedicated Food Hall, Fish and Fruit & Veg Markets. There are Full Market Days on Friday and Saturday as well and not forgetting the giant Antique & Second Hand Market every Wednesday and this Wednesday our small but perfectly formed Farmers Market on Goose Hill...

3   The extraordinary Translunar Paradise is the latest show to grace the stage at our new performance venue Cast. The full programme of offerings fantastic and fun can be picked up from the venue itself or from the TIC on High Street.

4   By Wednesday we could all do with a laugh and the regular Comedy Club Night at the Cask Corner Dive Bar on Cleveland Street hosted by Sully O'Sullivan should meet that need. 
 
5   Wednesday is also the first day of a new exhibition of paintings by artist Louis Patey at the Mac Gallery - with the evening 'opening'  of the show following on Friday from 6pm.                       
 
6   Thursday night is jazz night in Doncaster with the excellent Djangonauts live in concert at the Conservative Club on South Parade from 8.30pm. Nice...

7   Lovers of contemporary movies will like the Friday afternoon screening of Hitchcock at Doncaster Little Theatre just off East Laith Gate. This venue has a varied programme of live drama and film - pick up a copy from the theatre or from the TIC.
 
8   Friday is all about toilets with the story of local lad Thomas Crapper who revolutionised the flushing loo on the stage at Cast in a play called Royal Flush. Show starts at 7.45pm.

9   Saturday sees that Doncaster institution Tags Model Shop on Nether Hall Road reopen. Its original owner (who sold the business to the now defunct chain Model Zone a few years ago) has returned from retirement to save the business he built up for the benefit of another generation of Donny model makers.

10 Has two performances of a fun kids' show Who's Been Sitting in My Chair? at 12.30 and 3.00pm on Sunday at Cast on Waterdale.

Donny's top 10 things to do in the town centre this week

Here's Donny's top ten highlights for the week...


1   On Tuesday its another full Market Day on Doncaster's award winning Markets with over 400 stalls, the majority of them indoors - including over 70 food traders in the dedicated Food Hall, Fish and Fruit & Veg Markets. There are Full Market Days on Friday and Saturday as well and not forgetting the giant Antique & Second Hand Market on Wednesday...

2   On Wednesday there's a Lunch Hour Concert of classical violin and piano music at the Museum on Chequer Road featuring Jonathan and Elizabeth Sparey. A good opportunity to visit some of the exhibitions on at the venue including the St Leger inspired Horsing Around show...

3   Cast - our amazing new performance venue - has a visit from popular singer Gareth Gates on Wednesday night, performing in the main auditorium at 7.30pm.

4   Upstairs in the Salutation is the place to be on Thursday evening. Local artist Terry Chipp is demonstrating the creation of a new painting with everyone attending in with a chance of winning the artwork produced

5   A new production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado opens at Cast on Thursday night with a further performance on Friday. The venue will be busy at it is also hosting performances of Kiss Me Like You Mean It on the same nights...

6   Friday offers us a great opportunity to explore one of the town's most important buildings with a free admission Open Day at the Mansion House on High Street from 10am until 2pm...

7   Another fine building to visit on Friday is Doncaster Minster, the excuse being the free lunchtime Organ Recital by Lee Dunleavy at 1.10pm...

8   On Saturday popular author Robyn Young will be meeting fans and signing books at Waterstones from 2pm. Perhaps pop in to see her while shopping in the Frenchgate...

9   Donny is not ashamed to give Cast a third entry in this week's top ten to mention Saturday night's concert by first lady of jazz, the great Clare Teal. Music of a different kind is represented by The Smoking Hearts at the Leopard, Warrior at the Horse & Groom and bands at Cask Corner the Vintage Rock Bar and other venues across the town centre

10  And finally, it's been a long time coming but Saturday night also marks the grand VIP reopening of Doncaster night club Club Faith - formerly Karisma - on Duke Street from 10pm until late...

1     Doncaster Little Theatre has the farce 'Splish Splash' all week...

2     Top Thin Lizzy tribute band Limehouse Lizzy play the Leopard on Friday...

3     Our new performance venue Cast presents the bonkers 'Inspector Norse' on Weds and Thursday...

4     The Frenchgate hosts the visiting 'Agora' Greek themed market from Weds to Saturday...

5     'Horsing Around' is a free exhibition of horsey art at the Museum and Art Gallery all week...

6     The Cask Corner Dive Bar plays host to popular band Crosscut Saw on Saturday...

7     The Museum's the place to be on Wednesday lunchtime for classical pianist Martin Jacoby's gig...

8     Friday sees a Gala Charity Evening at the Minster with the excellent Shirebrook Miners Band...

9     Top local duo Rita Payne have a gig at Cast on Saturday night...

10   Goose Hill is the location for Wednesday's twice-monthly local Farmers Market...
